German tuner Hamann launched a new upgrade programme for the 2011 BMW 5 Series fitted with the M Sport package, focusing on visual and chassis enhancements rather than outright performance. The kit, announced in early 2011, delivers a more aggressive appearance but leaves the car’s engine untouched.

Exterior styling and chassis upgrades

Hamann’s package builds on the factory M Sport look with a revised front bumper, echoing the assertive lines of BMW’s own design. The rear is updated with a new bumper and a Hamann-branded rear muffler featuring four tailpipes, which provides a sportier visual stance and a deeper exhaust note. The kit also includes bespoke side skirts, further lowering the car’s profile and giving it a more planted look.

Customers can select from a range of multispoke alloy wheels in 20- or 21-inch diameters, with numerous finishes and designs available. Hamann also offers a suspension upgrade that lowers the 5 Series, increasing chassis stiffness and promising sharper handling characteristics, particularly through corners. These changes are aimed at drivers who want more presence and agility from their executive saloon without modifying the powertrain.

Interior enhancements

Inside, Hamann’s upgrades centre on tactile and visual improvements. The kit provides carbon fibre trim pieces for a more technical and bespoke feel. A specially designed sports steering wheel, complete with airbag compatibility, replaces the standard unit, while aluminium pedals add a motorsport-inspired touch. The overall effect is intended to lift the 5 Series’ cabin ambience in line with the car’s more assertive exterior.

Position in the tuning market

Hamann’s approach with the 2011 5 Series M Sport kit reflects a trend among BMW tuners to focus on appearance and handling for models already equipped with the factory M Sport package. By not altering the engine or electronics, the kit appeals to owners who want a more individual look and sharper dynamics while retaining BMW’s original reliability and warranty coverage. For those seeking more extensive upgrades, other tuners such as AC Schnitzer have offered full performance packages for the same generation 5 Series.
