2012 Mercedes C63 AMG facelift revealed ahead of Geneva
Images of the updated 2012 Mercedes C63 AMG, in both saloon and estate forms, have surfaced ahead of its official debut, showing revised styling and a new transmission.
Images of the facelifted 2012 Mercedes C63 AMG appeared ahead of its scheduled debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, revealing a series of updates for both the saloon and estate variants. The changes focus on revised styling, updated lighting and a new transmission, while the naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 remains at the core of the AMG offering.
Styling and lighting updates for 2012
The leaked images show the 2012 C63 AMG with a subtly reworked front end. The headlights are reshaped, and the front fascia now incorporates LED daytime running lights. Unlike some earlier AMG models, the pronounced air vents at the front corners are absent, giving the car a more integrated look. At the rear, the tail lights also move to full LED units, aligning the AMG with the rest of the updated C-Class range.
Both saloon and estate versions receive these exterior updates, maintaining the aggressive stance expected from AMG while bringing the car in line with Mercedes’ latest design cues. The overall silhouette and proportions remain familiar, but the lighting changes and bumper revisions mark out the facelifted model from its predecessor.
Engine, transmission and performance
Mercedes-AMG has opted to retain the 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 for the 2012 model, despite the arrival of the newer 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 in other AMG models. Output remains at 457 hp as standard, with an optional Performance Package increasing this to 481 hp. The performance pack includes upgraded pistons, connecting rods and a lighter crankshaft, as well as a raised top speed of 174 mph.
With the new MCT transmission, official fuel consumption drops to 12L/100km, down from 13.4L/100km on the outgoing model. This brings the C63 AMG closer to newer rivals in terms of efficiency, without sacrificing the character of the large-displacement V8. No major changes are reported to suspension or braking hardware at this stage.
Launch timing and market context
The updated C63 AMG will make its public debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, with sales expected to follow later in the year. The decision to retain the 6.2-litre engine sets the facelifted C63 AMG apart from newer AMG models adopting downsized, turbocharged powertrains. For buyers, this means continued access to one of the last naturally aspirated V8s in the segment, paired with improved efficiency and updated styling.
