Toyota has taken the covers off the 2012 Land Cruiser at the Brussels Motor Show, opting for a European debut rather than the higher-profile stages in Detroit or Tokyo. The updated model brings new exterior and interior styling, a more powerful and cleaner V8 diesel, and a suite of additional off-road technologies aimed at keeping the Land Cruiser competitive in the large SUV segment.

Updated V8 diesel meets Euro 5 and delivers more power

The 2012 Land Cruiser retains its 4.5-litre V8 turbodiesel, but Toyota has uprated the engine to 286hp at 3,600rpm and 650Nm of torque available from 1,600 to 2,800rpm. This marks a modest increase in output, but more importantly, the engine now complies with Euro 5 emissions regulations, a requirement for continued sales in many European markets. The update ensures the Land Cruiser remains an option for buyers needing a large diesel SUV that meets current standards.

New off-road technology for 2012

Toyota has added several new features to improve the Land Cruiser’s off-road capability. The Turn Assist system works in conjunction with Crawl Control to help manoeuvre the vehicle in tight spaces on rough ground. Multi-terrain Select allows the driver to tailor traction and stability settings for different surfaces, while the Multi-terrain Monitor provides real-time camera views around the vehicle. A Tyre Angle Display shows steering position, useful for precise wheel placement off-road.

Interior upgrades and equipment

Inside, the 2012 Land Cruiser receives a coloured TFT multi-information display and blue illumination for a more modern look. Front seats are trimmed in Alcantara leather, with both heating and cooling functions, and memory settings for added comfort. Active headrests are included for safety. The Toyota Touch Pro multimedia and navigation system brings voice command, Bluetooth connectivity and a rear-view camera as standard, aiming to bring the Land Cruiser’s cabin technology up to date with rivals.

Availability and market context

Toyota has not yet confirmed pricing for the 2012 Land Cruiser, but the model is expected to reach European showrooms later in the year. The decision to unveil in Brussels highlights the importance of the European market for the Land Cruiser, especially as emissions standards tighten and buyers demand more comfort and technology from large SUVs. For comparison, Toyota has also recently refreshed other models in its European line-up, including the Hilux and Highlander.
