Kia GT4 Stinger Concept Unveiled at 2014 Detroit Show
Kia revealed its rear-wheel-drive GT4 Stinger sports coupe concept at the 2014 Detroit Motor Show, targeting enthusiasts with a 315hp turbo engine and striking design.
Kia introduced the GT4 Stinger Concept at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, giving the public its first look at a rear-wheel-drive sports coupe aimed squarely at driving enthusiasts. The concept, which had already appeared online in the days before the show, marked a bold move for the brand, which is better known in Europe for its hatchbacks and crossovers than for performance models.
The GT4 Stinger is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine, delivering 315hp to the rear wheels via a six-speed close-ratio manual gearbox. Kia claims a kerb weight of just 1,303kg, achieved with a focus on simplicity and lightweight construction. The concept rides on a 103.1-inch wheelbase and measures 169.7 inches long, 74.4 inches wide and just 49.2 inches high, giving it a low, squat stance.
Design and Interior Details
The exterior design features a long bonnet, prominent wheel arches and Kia’s signature grille, but with more aggression than seen on its production models. Notable details include vertical LED headlights, see-through A-pillars for improved visibility, and a dual exhaust arrangement at the rear. The 2+2 coupe layout is clearly performance-oriented, with minimal overhangs and a purposeful stance.
Inside, the GT4 Stinger continues the motorsport theme. The cabin features racing-style bucket seats, billet aluminium pedals, red stitched pull straps on the doors, and a red LED instrument panel. The interior is stripped back, with few distractions, reflecting the concept’s focus on driving rather than luxury.
Kia’s Ambitions for Performance
Kia has made no secret of its interest in expanding into the sports coupe market. The GT4 Stinger is a clear signal of intent, previewing what a rear-wheel-drive Kia performance car could look like. While the company stopped short of confirming production plans at Detroit, executives have said that a rear-drive coupe is under consideration. If built, it would compete with the likes of the Toyota GT86 and Nissan 370Z, bringing a new badge to a segment dominated by established Japanese and German rivals.
