2014 Jeep Cherokee Unveiled at New York Auto Show
Jeep has revealed the 2014 Cherokee in New York, introducing a new platform, updated engines and a nine-speed automatic gearbox for its mid-size SUV.
Jeep has pulled the covers off the 2014 Cherokee at the New York Auto Show, marking the public debut of a model that introduces a new direction for the brand’s mid-size SUV. The latest Cherokee is the first Jeep to use Chrysler’s Compact U.S. Wide platform, a move aimed at improving both on-road handling and comfort while maintaining the off-road ability that buyers expect from the marque.
The new Cherokee’s styling is a departure from its predecessor, with a more aerodynamic shape and design elements influenced by the latest Grand Cherokee. Jeep claims the changes bring improved fuel efficiency, reduced CO2 emissions and better on-road dynamics. The independent front and rear suspension is intended to deliver a more refined ride, while retaining the off-road credentials central to the brand’s reputation.
New engines and nine-speed automatic
Buyers will have a choice of two petrol engines at launch. The entry-level unit is a 2.4-litre Tigershark four-cylinder producing 184 bhp and 171 lb-ft of torque. The range also includes a new 3.2-litre Pentastar V6, rated at 271 bhp and 239 lb-ft. Both engines are paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, a first in the segment, which Jeep says will benefit both performance and efficiency.
The 2014 Cherokee will be available in four trims: Sport, Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk. The Trailhawk version is positioned as the most off-road capable, with enhanced 4x4 systems and additional ground clearance.
Interior and equipment
Inside, the Cherokee offers a choice of cloth or leather upholstery, with available heated and ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel. Equipment highlights include a wireless charging pad, a 7-inch configurable colour display, an optional 3.5-inch grayscale screen, and ten airbags as standard. Stability control and cruise control are also included across the range.

What the new platform brings
The adoption of the Compact U.S. Wide platform links the Cherokee more closely with other models in the Chrysler and Fiat groups, allowing for a modern suspension setup and increased equipment integration. Jeep expects these changes to help the Cherokee compete more effectively with rivals in the mid-size SUV segment, particularly in terms of ride comfort and technology.
