Chevrolet Unveils Corvette Z06 Coupe and Convertible in New York
Chevrolet revealed both coupe and convertible versions of the 2015 Corvette Z06 at the 2014 New York Auto Show, featuring a 625hp supercharged V8 and a stiffer aluminium structure.
Chevrolet presented the new Corvette Z06 Coupe and Convertible to the public at the 2014 New York Auto Show, marking the first time both body styles have been offered for the Z06. The announcement confirmed that the 2015 Z06 is the most powerful Corvette available from the factory, with both variants sharing the same technical specifications and performance focus.
Powertrain and Performance
Both the Z06 Coupe and Convertible use Chevrolet’s 6.2-litre LT4 supercharged V8, producing 625hp and 645lb ft of torque. The engine features Active Fuel Management and continuously variable valve timing, technologies adopted from the standard Stingray. Chevrolet’s figures place the Z06 comfortably ahead of previous production Corvettes in terms of output.
Buyers can expect similar performance from both body styles. Chevrolet claims that the new aluminium chassis allows the convertible’s structure to be 20 percent stiffer than the outgoing Z06 coupe, with a curb weight nearly identical to the fixed-roof version. This means the open-top model does not carry the usual weight penalty associated with convertibles, a point Chevrolet highlighted at the show.
Convertible Roof and Chassis Details
The Z06 Convertible features a power-operated roof that can be raised or lowered at speeds up to 50km/h (31mph). This system is designed for convenience in stop-and-go traffic or when weather conditions change unexpectedly. The use of an aluminium chassis, first introduced on the C7 Stingray, underpins both Z06 variants. Chevrolet’s engineers reinforced the structure to handle the increased power and to maintain rigidity for the convertible, which no longer requires additional bracing that would add weight.
Market Position and Availability
With the Z06 now available as both coupe and convertible, Chevrolet aims to broaden the appeal of its flagship performance model. Both versions share the same powertrain and chassis technology, so buyers do not have to compromise on performance when choosing the open-top model. The Z06 sits above the Stingray in the Corvette range, offering higher output and track-oriented engineering. Orders for both coupe and convertible were open to US dealers following the New York debut.
