Chevrolet Corvette Z06 unveiled at 2014 Detroit Motor Show
Chevrolet has launched the 2015 Corvette Z06 at the Detroit Motor Show, revealing a supercharged V8, new aero packages and a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes.
Chevrolet introduced the 2015 Corvette Z06 at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, marking the world premiere of the most powerful production Corvette to date. The new Z06 is powered by a 6.2-litre LT4 supercharged V8, delivering at least 625hp and 861Nm of torque, according to official figures released at the show.
Buyers can choose between a seven-speed manual transmission and a newly developed eight-speed automatic. Power is sent to the rear wheels, with the Z06 sitting on 19-inch front and 20-inch rear alloys, wrapped in Michelin tyres measuring 285/30 at the front and 335/25 at the rear. Chevrolet highlighted that the new automatic is lighter than the previous six-speed unit, and claims shift times faster than those of the dual-clutch gearboxes used by some European rivals.
Aerodynamics and performance options
The Z06's bodywork features a carbon fibre aero package as standard, including a front splitter, larger rear spoiler and extended rockers. For those seeking maximum track capability, Chevrolet offers the Z07 Performance Package. This adds a larger rear spoiler with a see-through centre section, bigger front winglets, Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup tyres and Brembo carbon ceramic-matrix brakes. The company says the Z07 kit gives the Z06 the highest level of aerodynamic downforce ever achieved on a production GM vehicle.
Technical highlights and market position
Chevrolet's use of a 1.7-litre Eaton supercharger and an intercooler on the LT4 engine aims to balance outright power with efficiency. The Z06 is positioned as a rival to European supercars, with Chevrolet emphasising its combination of performance, technology and relative value.
