Honda Civic Type R debuts at 2015 Geneva Motor Show
Honda has unveiled the production-ready Civic Type R at Geneva, confirming a 310PS turbocharged engine and a raft of chassis upgrades for its most aggressive hot hatch yet.
Honda has officially launched the production version of the Civic Type R at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, confirming a 310PS 2.0-litre VTEC turbocharged engine and a suite of performance upgrades aimed at the hot hatch segment.
This new Civic Type R marks Honda’s return to the high-performance hatchback market with its most powerful production Civic to date. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo, delivering 310PS (228kW) and 400Nm of torque, is paired exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox. Honda claims 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 270km/h, figures that put it at the sharp end of the class for front-wheel-drive performance.
Aerodynamics and chassis technology have been a major focus. The Type R receives a functional body kit, including a new front bumper with large intakes, a splitter, vented front wings, side skirts, underbody panels, a prominent rear diffuser, and a large rear wing. Honda says these elements are designed to reduce lift and improve high-speed stability. The car sits on 19-inch alloys fitted with 235/35 tyres developed specifically for this model.
Chassis and braking upgrades
To handle the extra power, Honda has fitted a four-point Adaptive Damper System, a Dual Axis Strut Front Suspension to reduce torque steer, and a Dual Pinion Electric Power Steering setup. Braking is supplied by Brembo, with four-piston front calipers and 350mm drilled discs. The four-tailpipe exhaust system is unique to the Type R.
Interior and equipment
Inside, the Type R keeps the Civic’s basic layout but adds sports seats with red contrast stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a machined aluminium gear knob. The GT package brings Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition, navigation, premium audio, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, power folding mirrors, parking sensors, and red exterior detailing.
Market context and rivals
The 2015 Civic Type R enters a fiercely contested hot hatch market, going up against models such as the Volkswagen Golf R, Ford Focus ST, and Renault Mégane RS. Honda’s focus on outright power and track-ready aerodynamics signals intent to challenge the segment’s performance benchmarks.
