2015 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG caught testing with new V8
Spy shots reveal the next-generation Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG in light camouflage, with the performance saloon expected to switch to a twin-turbocharged V8.
Mercedes-Benz’s next-generation C63 AMG has been spotted undergoing road testing in Europe, offering an early glimpse at the performance saloon ahead of its expected market launch later in 2014. The prototype shows only light camouflage, mainly at the front and rear, leaving much of the new bodywork and stance visible.
The test car’s disguise focuses on the bumpers and sills, suggesting that Mercedes-AMG is keen to keep the final details of the car’s aggressive body kit under wraps for now. The current C63 AMG is known for its naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8, but the new model is expected to follow the rest of the AMG range by adopting a twin-turbocharged V8. Reports point to a 5.5-litre unit, similar to the engine found in other recent AMG models, although Mercedes-Benz has not confirmed final specifications.
The move to a smaller, turbocharged engine would bring the C63 AMG in line with emissions and efficiency targets, while still delivering the high power figures expected from the AMG badge. The outgoing car’s V8 produced 457 PS in standard form, with more in special editions, so expectations are high for the new engine’s output and character.
Styling and bodywork changes
The prototype’s bodywork reveals wider arches and a lower stance, typical of AMG’s approach to its most powerful C-Class variant. The light camouflage at the front and rear hints at new bumper designs and a possible aerodynamic package, but the overall shape remains close to the standard C-Class saloon. AMG-specific wheels and larger brakes are visible through the camouflage, reinforcing the car’s performance intent.
Inside, no images have surfaced yet, but AMG models typically feature bespoke seats, unique trim, and performance-focused displays. The new C-Class platform is lighter and stiffer than before, which should benefit both handling and efficiency.
Position in the AMG line-up
The C63 AMG will continue as the performance flagship of the C-Class saloon range, sitting above the C400 and other six-cylinder models. By moving to a twin-turbocharged engine, Mercedes-AMG is following a trend already seen in models such as the S63 AMG and the E63 AMG. For buyers seeking a high-powered saloon without downsizing to six cylinders, the new C63 AMG remains a key option.
