Mysterious Subaru BRZ Prototype Draws Attention in New York
A heavily modified Subaru BRZ, featuring aggressive styling and track-inspired details, appeared without explanation at the 2015 New York Auto Show, fuelling speculation about a future performance variant.
A striking Subaru BRZ drew crowds at the 2015 New York Auto Show, its identity and purpose unconfirmed by the manufacturer. The car, finished in Subaru’s signature blue, stood apart from standard BRZ models thanks to a collection of aggressive styling changes and track-inspired features.
The car’s most obvious departure from the regular BRZ was its substantial rear wing, joined by wider front and rear fenders, new side vents, and a black-finished roof. The front bumper housed an LED strip, while the side mirrors were capped in black. Large multi-spoke alloy wheels and a lowered stance added to the impression of a car intended for more than just show.
Subaru did not provide any information about the car’s mechanicals or whether it previews a future production model. The presence of such a modified BRZ on the show floor led to immediate speculation about a long-rumoured BRZ STI or a similar high-performance derivative. Previous concept versions and prototypes have been shown in Japan, but the company has so far resisted launching a full factory performance version for global markets. The standard BRZ uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine producing around 200hp, but the modifications on display suggested the possibility of more power or at least a more focused chassis setup.
Visual changes signal track intent
The show car’s exterior package was more extreme than any production BRZ to date. The combination of aerodynamic appendages, blacked-out details, and functional-looking vents suggested a car aimed at track-day enthusiasts or motorsport customers. No interior photographs or technical details were released, so it remains unclear whether the changes were purely cosmetic or if the car featured mechanical upgrades beneath its skin.
The lack of official information left showgoers and enthusiasts to speculate about the car’s future. Some pointed to earlier BRZ concept appearances, such as those at the Tokyo Auto Salon, as evidence that Subaru is still gauging interest in a more extreme version. Until the company confirms its intentions, the New York show car remains a curiosity, one that keeps the rumour mill turning for Subaru’s small coupé.
