BMW has released a comprehensive set of images for the updated 2016 M135i, highlighting the hot hatch’s refreshed design and technical details following its Geneva debut.
BMW has published an extensive new photo gallery for the 2016 M135i, giving a detailed look at the facelifted hot hatch just weeks after its public unveiling at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.
The updated M135i stands as the performance flagship of the revised 1 Series range, which itself received a significant visual overhaul for 2016. BMW’s latest images emphasise changes to the front end, where slimmer headlights and a reshaped bumper give the car a sharper, more assertive appearance. The kidney grille remains a central feature, but the overall effect is closer to the 2 Series Coupe than the original 1 Series hatchback.
Visual tweaks extend to the rear, with redesigned bumpers and subtle detail changes setting the M135i apart from lesser 1 Series models. The new look addresses criticisms of the pre-facelift car’s styling, which some buyers found less convincing against rivals such as the Audi RS3 and Mercedes-AMG A45.
Engine and performance details
The M135i retains its 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine, producing 326hp (240kW) and 450Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic gearbox. With the manual, BMW claims 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds. The automatic improves this to 4.9 seconds, while the all-wheel drive xDrive version cuts the sprint further to 4.7 seconds.
These figures keep the M135i competitive with other hot hatches, though the BMW remains one of the few rear-wheel drive options in the segment. The xDrive variant brings all-wheel drive traction, but the standard model continues to appeal to enthusiasts who value traditional BMW dynamics.
Position in the 1 Series range
The facelifted 1 Series introduced a range of new engines, including a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol in the 116i. However, the M135i sits at the top of the line-up, distinguished by its power output and performance focus. Its specification and price place it above the mainstream 1 Series models, targeting buyers looking for a practical hatchback with genuine performance credentials.
