Mazda has announced that the new-generation MX-5 will start at $24,950 in the United States, with the first cars due to reach US dealerships in summer 2015. The entry price undercuts several direct competitors in the affordable sports car segment.

Trim levels and standard equipment

The 2016 MX-5 will be available in three trims for the US market: Sport, Club and Grand Touring. The entry-level Sport includes LED headlights, Bluetooth connectivity, USB input, leather-wrapped gear knob, and power door locks as standard. Higher trims add further equipment, though full details for each grade had not been released at the time of announcement.

  • Sport: $24,950, basic features including Bluetooth and LED headlights
  • Club: mid-level trim, additional features (details to follow)
  • Grand Touring: top trim, further equipment (details to follow)

Engine and performance

All US-market 2016 MX-5s are powered by Mazda’s 2.0-litre SKYACTIV-G four-cylinder engine. The unit produces 155 hp and 200 Nm of torque. Mazda claims a kerb weight of 1,057 kg, making this generation around 68 kg lighter than its predecessor. This reduction should contribute to improved agility and efficiency, though official performance and fuel economy figures were not provided at launch.

Market position and availability

Mazda’s decision to set the MX-5’s US base price below that of rivals like the Toyota GT86 is aimed at reinforcing the roadster’s reputation for value. The car is expected to attract both existing MX-5 owners and new buyers looking for a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports car. Orders for the 2016 MX-5 open ahead of its summer 2015 US launch. Detailed pricing for higher trims and full specifications will be announced closer to the car’s arrival in showrooms.

For comparison, Mazda priced the 2016 MX-5 from $31,990 in Australia, reflecting local market differences. US buyers can also explore the official online configurator, which launched ahead of the car’s arrival.
