Acura reveals updated 2016 MDX with new tech and safety features
The 2016 Acura MDX arrives with a new 9-speed automatic gearbox, enhanced cabin technology, and a lighter, improved all-wheel drive system.
Acura has taken the wraps off the 2016 MDX, introducing a series of technical and equipment updates for its three-row SUV. The revised model goes on sale in the United States in February, with a starting price from $42,865 before destination.
New transmission and all-wheel drive system
The most substantial mechanical change is the adoption of a 9-speed automatic transmission, replacing the previous 6-speed unit. Acura claims the new gearbox is 30 kg lighter, helping to improve response and efficiency. The familiar 3.5-litre V6 engine remains, paired with either front-wheel drive or an updated Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system. The latest SH-AWD setup is lighter and said to offer sharper torque vectoring, benefiting both traction and handling.
Cabin and technology updates
Inside, the 2016 MDX brings a number of new features. The Easy Entry driver’s seat now moves 35 mm rearward when the driver’s door opens, improving access. Acura has added Siri voice recognition, a frameless rearview mirror, and a multi-view rear camera with dynamic guidelines. The traditional gear lever has been replaced by push-button controls for the shift-by-wire system, freeing up space on the centre console.

Expanded safety equipment
Acura has made several advanced driver assistance features standard or more widely available for 2016. The MDX now offers Collision Mitigation Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Information, Road Departure Mitigation and Rear Cross Traffic Monitor. Many of these systems were previously optional or unavailable on the MDX.
The 2016 MDX faces competition from rivals such as the2016 BMW X1and2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE, as premium SUVs continue to prioritise technology and safety. Acura’s updates to the MDX are aimed at keeping the model competitive in this crowded segment.
