Alfa Romeo has expanded its Giulietta hatchback range with the introduction of a new 2.0-litre JTDM-2 diesel engine delivering 140bhp. This addition aims to broaden the Giulietta’s appeal to drivers who value a blend of performance and efficiency. The new engine is positioned between the existing 1.6 JTDM-2 (105bhp) and 2.0 JTDM-2 (170bhp) diesel options, and became available from February 2011.

Introduction of the 2.0 JTDM-2 140bhp Diesel Engine

Performance and Efficiency

The 2.0 JTDM-2 engine produces 140bhp at 4000rpm and up to 350Nm of torque at 1750rpm when the Alfa D.N.A. drive selector is set to Dynamic mode. In Normal mode, torque is capped at 320Nm at 1500rpm. This configuration provides the Giulietta with a strong mid-range response, making it suitable for overtaking and motorway driving. The official 0-62mph time is 9.0 seconds, and the car has a top speed of 127mph. Alfa Romeo reports combined cycle fuel consumption of 62.8mpg and CO2 emissions of 119g/km, positioning the Giulietta among the more efficient diesel hatchbacks available in 2011.

For company car drivers, the Giulietta 2.0 JTDM-2 140bhp qualifies for a Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) rate of 13%. The engine is Euro 5 compliant and comes equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and Start&Stop technology as standard, helping to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy.

Technical Features and Engineering

The JTDM-2 engine represents the second generation of Alfa Romeo’s MultiJet diesel technology. It uses a common rail system capable of controlling injection pressure and timing independently of engine speed and fuel quantity. This allows for particularly smooth engine operation in a variety of driving situations. The engine also features an electronically controlled variable geometry turbocharger, which contributes to its responsive torque delivery.

To further improve emissions and fuel consumption, the engine incorporates an integrated Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system and advanced exhaust gas treatment technologies. These include a close-coupled diesel particulate filter and a built-in EGR system that helps control temperature and gas flow, resulting in lower emissions and reduced fuel use.

Another key advantage of the 2.0 JTDM-2 140bhp engine is its extended servicing intervals. This minimises the amount of maintenance required over the vehicle’s life, which can help reduce running costs for owners.

Chassis, Suspension, and Braking

The Giulietta equipped with the 2.0 JTDM-2 140bhp engine features a chassis designed for both comfort and agility. At the front, it uses MacPherson independent suspension with an anti-roll bar, while the rear features a multi-link system. Standard tyres are 205/55 R16, and braking is managed by 305mm front discs and 264mm rear discs. The kerb weight is 1320kg, and the fuel tank holds 60 litres. The maximum towing capacity is 1300kg, making the Giulietta practical for a range of uses beyond daily commuting.

Pricing, Trims, and Market Position

The 2.0 JTDM-2 140bhp engine is available in both Lusso and Veloce trims. On-the-road prices start at £20,750 for Lusso and £22,050 for Veloce. Both versions include the full suite of Giulietta safety and comfort features. The new engine is positioned as a cost-effective alternative to the higher-powered 170bhp diesel, offering a balance of performance, efficiency, and value for money.

For buyers considering alternatives, Alfa Romeo has also updated other models in its line-up, such as the Brera and Spider, with new engine options. However, the Giulietta 2.0 JTDM-2 140bhp stands out in its class, particularly for its combination of torque, efficiency, and low emissions.
