Alfa Romeo will launch the MiTo MultiAir in September 2009, introducing a new generation of 1.4-litre petrol engines using electro-hydraulic valve control. The MultiAir system is designed to increase power and torque while cutting fuel consumption and emissions, marking a technical shift for the brand’s smallest model.
The heart of the MultiAir system is an electro-hydraulic valve control unit that manages air intake directly through the engine’s valves, eliminating the need for a traditional throttle. Alfa Romeo claims this approach improves combustion efficiency, enabling sharper throttle response and lower emissions. Compared with older petrol units of the same displacement, the company says drivers can expect up to 10% more power, 15% more torque, and a 10% reduction in both fuel use and CO2 output. Reductions in particulates (up to 40%) and nitrogen oxides (up to 60%) are also claimed.
Three versions of the 1.4-litre MultiAir will be available at launch: a 105hp naturally aspirated unit, a 135hp turbo, and a 170hp turbo reserved for the MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde. The first two engines are offered across the MiTo range, while the 170hp unit is exclusive to the performance flagship, which arrives after the initial launch. All engines are paired with five- or six-speed manual gearboxes, depending on output and trim.
Technical details and production
Production of the MultiAir engines takes place at Fiat Powertrain Technologies’ Termoli plant. The technology is intended as a modular solution, with potential for use in other Fiat Group petrol engines and possible future diesel applications. The MiTo MultiAir also debuts Alfa’s Start&Stop system, which automatically cuts the engine at a standstill to save fuel, then restarts it as needed. This feature is available across the MultiAir range and is integrated with the car’s existing comfort systems.
Alfa Romeo positions MultiAir as a major step, likening its importance to the arrival of common-rail diesel technology on the Alfa Romeo 156 in 1997. The company expects the system to play a key role in its engine strategy for years to come, especially as emissions standards tighten across Europe.
What buyers can expect
For buyers, the MiTo MultiAir promises improved performance and drivability without the penalty of higher fuel bills or emissions.
