Audi has taken the wraps off its hydrogen-powered A7 Sportback h-tron Quattro concept at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, combining fuel cell technology with quattro all-wheel drive.

Audi has unveiled the A7 Sportback h-tron Quattro concept at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, marking its most advanced hydrogen fuel cell project to date. The large five-door coupe uses a hydrogen fuel cell system paired with quattro all-wheel drive, presenting a new direction for the brand’s alternative powertrain development.

The A7 Sportback h-tron Quattro concept is based on the familiar A7 platform but replaces the conventional petrol or diesel engine with a hydrogen fuel cell stack. This system generates electricity on board by combining hydrogen with oxygen, emitting only water vapour from the exhaust. The electricity produced powers two electric motors, one on each axle, delivering all-wheel drive capability.

Audi’s concept also features plug-in charging, allowing the car to be recharged from the mains for short-distance driving on battery power alone. This dual approach aims to combine the long-distance refuelling advantages of hydrogen with the convenience of electric-only operation for urban use.

Technical details and positioning

While Audi did not confirm full technical specifications at the LA debut, the manufacturer stated that the h-tron system is designed to deliver performance comparable to a conventional A7. The hydrogen tanks are integrated into the floor, helping to preserve the A7’s interior space and practicality. The car’s electric motors are derived from Audi’s experience with plug-in hybrids and e-tron models, but the hydrogen fuel cell is the key innovation here.

Audi has previously shown interest in alternative powertrains, including the A3 e-tron plug-in hybrid and the R18 e-tron Quattro that claimed a historic win at Le Mans. The h-tron concept signals a further step into hydrogen, positioning Audi alongside other manufacturers exploring fuel cell technology, such as Toyota with its Mirai.

Market context and future outlook

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles remain rare in 2014, with infrastructure and production costs as major hurdles. Audi’s decision to showcase the h-tron Quattro in a large executive saloon underlines its confidence in the technology’s potential, but the company has not committed to a production timeline. Any future adoption will depend on the pace of hydrogen infrastructure development and market readiness.
