BMW 5 Series Touring F11 targets efficiency with 520d diesel
The 2011 BMW 520d Touring F11 arrives with a 184 bhp four-cylinder diesel, Auto Start-Stop, and a focus on fleet buyers seeking lower emissions and running costs.
BMW launched the 520d Touring F11 in 2010, aiming squarely at fleet and private buyers who prioritise running costs and practicality. The estate pairs BMW’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel with a six-speed manual gearbox, delivering 184 bhp and 380 Nm of torque. Performance stands at 0-100 km/h in 8.3 seconds and a top speed of 222 km/h.
Engine and performance
The 520d Touring uses BMW’s N47D20O1 engine, an all-aluminium 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit with common rail direct injection and a turbocharger. Maximum power is 184 bhp at 4000 rpm, with peak torque of 380 Nm available from 1750 to 2750 rpm. The engine’s high compression ratio of 16.5:1 and efficient turbocharging help deliver both strong mid-range response and low fuel consumption.
BMW quotes a combined fuel consumption of 5.2 l/100km (54.3 mpg), with urban and extra-urban figures at 6.2 and 4.6 l/100km respectively under EU5 standards. CO2 emissions are rated at 137 g/km, placing the 520d Touring in Road Tax Band E. The six-speed manual transmission features reduced drag losses, and all manual models include Auto Start-Stop and an optimum gearshift indicator to further cut consumption in everyday driving.
Dimensions, practicality and running costs
At 4907 mm long and 1860 mm wide, the 520d Touring offers the space expected of a large executive estate. The 2968 mm wheelbase provides generous rear legroom, while the estate body maximises boot capacity for luggage or business use. Kerb weight is 1785 kg. The 70-litre fuel tank and strong fuel economy mean long distances between fill-ups.
BMW targeted the 520d Touring at company car drivers and fleet managers, with its low CO2 emissions and high efficiency making it one of the most tax-efficient cars in its segment at launch. The model’s emissions and economy figures undercut many rivals in the executive estate class. Chassis and equipment
The 520d Touring rides on 17-inch wheels with 225/55 R17 tyres front and rear. Ventilated disc brakes feature at both ends, with 330 mm diameter discs and ABS. The steering uses rack and pinion with power assistance. Suspension is by struts at the front and multi-link at the rear, tuned for a balance of comfort and agility. BMW also offered M Sport and Business Edition trims, adding equipment and styling upgrades.
