Mercedes GL 350 BlueTEC and GL 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY updated for 2009
Mercedes-Benz introduces revised diesel GL-Class models with improved fuel efficiency, updated styling and new safety features for the 2009 model year.
Mercedes-Benz has refreshed its GL-Class diesel line-up for the 2009 model year, launching the GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC and the GL 350 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY with a focus on lower emissions, improved fuel economy and updated design features.
Efficiency and emissions improvements
The GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC introduces Mercedes’ SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, using AdBlue injection to cut nitrogen oxide emissions and comply with stricter environmental standards. Alongside it, the GL 350 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY brings a package of fuel-saving measures, including improved aerodynamics, low rolling resistance tyres and an energy-saving electro-hydraulic power steering system. According to Mercedes-Benz, the BlueEFFICIENCY model uses around 5% less fuel than its predecessor, while maintaining the same output from its 3.0-litre V6 diesel: 224 hp and 510 Nm of torque.
Both models use Mercedes’ 7G-TRONIC automatic gearbox, which now shifts to neutral at standstill to reduce engine load and fuel consumption. A dashboard display allows drivers to monitor and adjust their driving to maximise efficiency.
Styling and equipment changes
The 2009 GL-Class receives a sharper exterior look, with new bumpers, a redesigned chrome grille, updated fog lamps and chrome underbody protection. Wheel options now range from 18 to 21 inches, and the palette adds two new metallic shades: Tenorite Grey and Palladium Silver. The tailpipes are reworked in chrome, and the tow bar is now concealed behind the rear apron, swinging out only when required.
Inside, the GL continues to offer a range of safety and comfort features, including Mercedes’ PRE-SAFE system, Intelligent Light System with adaptive headlamps, and standard LED daytime running lights and taillights. The BlueEFFICIENCY model’s efficiency measures are matched by technology aimed at keeping running costs down for owners.
Market position and rivals
With these updates, Mercedes-Benz aims to keep the GL-Class competitive among luxury SUVs, particularly against rivals offering cleaner diesel technology. The two new diesel variants sit alongside V8 petrol and diesel options in the GL range, which continue to prioritise power and refinement but with higher emissions and fuel consumption.
