MINI Cooper SD Launches with 143hp Diesel and Lower Emissions

MINI introduces the Cooper SD, its most powerful diesel model yet, offering 143hp, improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions across Hatch, Clubman, Convertible and Countryman variants.

MINI has expanded its UK line-up with the introduction of the Cooper SD, a diesel-powered variant designed to deliver both performance and improved efficiency. This marks the first time MINI has offered a diesel engine in the Cooper S range, and the SD badge now sits at the top of MINI’s diesel offerings. The new engine is available across the Hatch, Clubman, Convertible and Countryman models, including the all-wheel-drive Countryman ALL4.

Engine Technology and Performance

At the heart of the Cooper SD is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. This unit features an all-aluminium crankcase, a turbocharger with variable intake geometry, and common-rail direct injection with solenoid-valve injectors. The result is an output of 143hp and 305Nm of torque, making it the most powerful diesel engine MINI had produced at the time of launch. This new powertrain represents a significant step up from the earlier Cooper D, offering improved acceleration and overtaking capability while maintaining impressive fuel efficiency.

Performance figures vary slightly across the different body styles. The Hatch SD is the fastest, reaching 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds and a top speed of 134mph. The Clubman SD matches the top speed but takes 8.6 seconds to reach 62mph. The Convertible SD achieves the sprint in 8.7 seconds, while the Countryman SD takes 9.3 seconds. The Countryman ALL4, with its all-wheel-drive system, is the slowest at 9.4 seconds, but still offers respectable performance for its size and weight.

Emissions, Economy and Tax Benefits

MINI claims combined fuel economy figures as high as 65.7mpg for the Hatch SD, with CO2 emissions of just 114g/km. Even the heavier Countryman ALL4 achieves a combined 57.6mpg and 130g/km CO2. These numbers place the Cooper SD range among the most efficient performance-oriented diesels available in the UK at the time. The improved efficiency is largely due to the advanced engine technologies, including the variable-geometry turbocharger and precise fuel injection system.

For UK buyers, the Hatch SD qualifies for a zero Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rate, making it attractive for both private and company car users. The company car benefit-in-kind tax rate stands at 13%, which includes the 3% diesel surcharge. Private owners of the Hatch SD also benefit from an annual road fund licence of just £30, further enhancing the car’s appeal for those looking to balance performance with running costs.

Pricing and Availability

At launch, the MINI Cooper S D range started at £18,750 for the Hatch, with the Clubman priced at £19,790, the Convertible at £21,130, and the Countryman at £21,970. The Countryman ALL4, which brings all-wheel drive to the diesel line-up, was the most expensive at £23,190. MINI scheduled the SD models to arrive in UK showrooms in spring 2011. There was no confirmation regarding availability in the US market at the time of launch, and the Cooper SD remained focused on European buyers seeking a blend of efficiency and performance.
