Alfa Romeo shelves MiTo GTA hot hatch project
Alfa Romeo has cancelled plans to produce the MiTo GTA, citing economic pressures and uncertainty over the business case for the high-performance hatch.
Alfa Romeo has confirmed it will not proceed with production of the MiTo GTA, the high-performance version of its supermini that was first shown as a concept at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. The decision comes as the company faces economic pressures and reassesses the viability of niche models in its line-up.
The MiTo GTA was intended as a flagship for the MiTo range, featuring a 1.75-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing around 240hp. Lightweight construction and a sport-focused chassis were expected to deliver performance to rival established hot hatches. Alfa Romeo had targeted a price of around £20,000 for the production model.
Financial crisis halts development
A company representative said the MiTo GTA was no longer viable in the wake of the global financial crisis. With demand for high-performance, low-volume models falling and budgets tightening across the Fiat Group, Alfa Romeo has decided not to pursue the project. The company indicated that the car may never see production.
The standard MiTo range, including the MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde, remains on sale. The Quadrifoglio Verde, introduced after the GTA project was shelved, offers a sportier option for buyers, though with lower power and a less aggressive set-up than the cancelled GTA. What the cancellation means for Alfa Romeo
The MiTo GTA's cancellation leaves Alfa Romeo without a true performance flagship in the supermini segment. The decision reflects a broader shift within the company to focus on more mainstream models and to reduce exposure to riskier, low-volume projects during economic uncertainty. While the MiTo GTA generated interest among enthusiasts, Alfa Romeo has prioritised financial stability over expanding its hot hatch line-up.
