Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the third-generation SLK Roadster, introducing new styling, technology and a revised engine line-up, with European orders starting from 17 January 2011. The new SLK aims to combine sharper looks and more efficient engines with features not previously seen in its segment.

The new SLK’s exterior adopts a more upright grille and pronounced front wings, echoing the SLS AMG’s styling cues. LED headlamps with distinctive light strips and a reworked aluminium front end give the roadster a more contemporary appearance. Mercedes-Benz claims aerodynamic improvements have reduced the drag coefficient to 0.30, down from the previous 0.32.

A key feature for the 2012 SLK is the Magic Sky Control panoramic vario-roof, which can switch from transparent to dark at the press of a button. This electro-chromic glass roof is a segment first and adds to the existing folding hardtop system that has been a hallmark of the SLK since its original launch. The roof is designed to improve comfort in both sunny and cooler conditions, building on earlier innovations such as the Airscarf neck-level heating system.

Engine line-up and efficiency improvements

At launch, the SLK range includes three petrol engines and a four-cylinder diesel. The SLK 200 BlueEFFICIENCY and SLK 250 BlueEFFICIENCY both use a 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol, producing 184 hp and 204 hp respectively. The SLK 350 BlueEFFICIENCY features a V6 petrol engine with 306 hp from 3.5 litres. Mercedes-Benz says all engines include the ECO start/stop function as standard, contributing to fuel savings of up to 25 percent compared with the outgoing models.

  • SLK 250 BlueEFFICIENCY: 1.8-litre turbo, 204 hp
  • SLK 350 BlueEFFICIENCY: 3.5-litre V6, 306 hp
  • 2.1-litre twin-turbo diesel: 204 hp

According to Mercedes-Benz, the SLK 200 BlueEFFICIENCY is the most economical roadster in its class. The diesel model, a 2.1-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder, also produces 204 hp, expanding the SLK’s appeal to buyers prioritising lower running costs and emissions.

Interior and equipment updates

Inside, the SLK adopts a more angular dashboard, inspired by the SLS AMG, with new circular air vents and updated switchgear. The cabin is finished with a range of new trim options, aiming for a more upmarket feel. Mercedes-Benz has also focused on safety, claiming the SLK sets new standards for the segment with its equipment list.

Pricing and availability

The new SLK can be ordered in Europe from mid-January 2011. German pricing starts at €38,675 for the SLK 200 BlueEFFICIENCY, €44,256.10 for the SLK 250 BlueEFFICIENCY and €52,300.50 for the SLK 350 BlueEFFICIENCY, all including VAT. US pricing will be announced closer to the car’s market launch in summer 2011.

The 2012 SLK Roadster arrives as Mercedes-Benz seeks to maintain its position in the compact premium roadster segment, offering new technology and improved efficiency.
