Volkswagen Scirocco Gains 1.4 TSI 122 PS Entry-Level Option
Volkswagen adds the 1.4-litre TSI 122 PS engine to the Scirocco range for 2010, bringing improved efficiency and a lower entry price to the coupé line-up.
Volkswagen has introduced a new entry-level engine for the Scirocco, with the 1.4-litre TSI 122 PS unit joining the coupé line-up from early 2010. This addition brings lower running costs and emissions, targeting buyers seeking a more efficient petrol option without sacrificing the Scirocco’s distinctive style.
The 1.4 TSI engine delivers 122 PS and 147 lbs ft of torque, sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. Volkswagen quotes a 0–62 mph time of 9.7 seconds and a top speed of 124 mph. With a combined fuel economy of 44.1 mpg and CO2 emissions of 146 g/km, this is the cleanest petrol-powered Scirocco in the range at launch.
Efficiency and emissions
The new engine option sits below the existing TSI and TDI units in both power and running costs. Its 146 g/km CO2 figure means it undercuts the other petrol models for emissions, making it more attractive for company car buyers and those facing higher road tax bands. While not as quick as the higher-output versions, the 1.4 TSI’s figures compare favourably with rival coupés and hatchbacks offering similar performance.
Standard equipment and options
Volkswagen has not stripped back the standard specification for the new entry model. Sciroccos fitted with the 1.4 TSI 122 PS engine come with a six-CD autochanger with iPod preparation, rain and dusk sensors, a multifunction computer, air conditioning and 17-inch ‘Donington’ alloy wheels. Safety equipment includes ABS, ESP and six airbags as standard. Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC) remains available as a £765 option, offering adjustable suspension and steering response for those wanting a more tailored drive.
For buyers interested in further customisation, Volkswagen has also announced a new ‘Lugano Black’ styling pack for the Scirocco GT. This package includes 19-inch gloss black alloy wheels and Piano Black interior inserts, priced at £950. The pack is exclusive to the GT trim and does not affect the new 1.4 TSI entry-level model directly, but broadens the range of personalisation options available across the line-up.
Where the 1.4 TSI fits in the Scirocco range
The arrival of the 1.4 TSI 122 PS engine brings the Scirocco’s starting price down and makes the coupé accessible to a wider audience. It sits below the 160 PS and 200 PS petrol engines and the 2.0-litre TDI diesels, providing a balance between performance and efficiency. Compared with rivals experimenting with downsized turbocharged engines, such as Ford’s EcoBoost and BMW’s three-cylinder turbos, Volkswagen’s TSI technology continues to emphasise small-capacity forced induction for both economy and usable power.
