ABT tunes latest Volkswagen Polo with power and style upgrades
German tuner ABT has revealed a performance and styling package for the new VW Polo, boosting diesel and petrol outputs and adding visual tweaks.
ABT Sportsline has announced a suite of upgrades for the latest Volkswagen Polo, making it the first major tuner to tackle the new generation of VW’s supermini. The package, revealed shortly after the car’s debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, targets both diesel and petrol variants and adds a series of visual enhancements.
Engine upgrades for TDI and TSI models
The core of ABT’s Polo programme is focused on the new 1.6 TDI diesels and the 1.2 TSI petrol engine. The 75hp 1.6 TDI receives a notable boost to 90hp, while the 90hp version is tuned to deliver 110hp. For buyers of the 1.2 TSI, ABT’s modifications lift the output to 130hp, a substantial increase over the standard figure. These upgrades are aimed at drivers seeking more performance without stepping up to the Polo GTI.
Styling and chassis enhancements
ABT’s visual package for the Polo includes a set of 18-inch ‘Z’ alloy wheels, a new exhaust system, a rear spoiler and a revised rear bumper insert. These additions give the Polo a more assertive appearance, setting it apart from standard models. Customers can also opt for ABT’s own springs to improve handling and stability, further sharpening the Polo’s dynamic appeal.
- Power increases for both diesel and petrol engines
- Larger 18-inch alloy wheels unique to ABT
- Optional suspension upgrades for handling
- Distinctive rear styling elements
Position in the market
With these upgrades, ABT positions the Polo as a more attractive option for buyers wanting extra performance and visual flair without moving to a full hot hatch. The power figures bring the diesel models closer to the territory of the Polo GTD, while the 1.2 TSI’s 130hp output sits above most standard supermini rivals.
