Opel Prepares GSi and OPC Hot Hatch Variants for Astra K
Opel is planning to expand the Astra K range with GSi and OPC models, targeting rivals like the Focus ST and Golf R with up to 300hp on offer.
Opel is preparing two performance versions of the Astra K, with GSi and OPC models set to target the competitive European hot hatch market. Both versions are expected to use the company's 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, with the GSi aiming for 250hp and the OPC projected to reach up to 300hp. These developments follow reports citing GM Europe chief Karl-Thomas Neumann, who has suggested the GSi badge will return to the Astra range in this new generation.
Opel Astra K to Gain GSi and OPC Hot Hatch Variants
GSi: Engine and Positioning
The Astra GSi is anticipated to utilise the same 2.0-litre turbo engine found in the larger Insignia, producing around 250hp. This output places the Astra GSi in direct competition with established models such as the Ford Focus ST and Volkswagen Golf GTI. Opel intends for the GSi to launch as a five-door hatchback, making it suitable for buyers seeking both practicality and performance.
The GSi will feature a distinctive body kit, sports suspension, upgraded brakes and interior changes including bucket seats. These enhancements are designed to provide improved handling and a more dynamic driving experience, while also giving the car a sportier appearance compared to standard Astra models.
OPC: Power and Features
Opel is also planning a new OPC model to replace the outgoing Astra OPC. The next Astra OPC is expected to further develop the 2.0-litre turbo engine, with a power output target of around 300hp. The OPC is likely to be offered in a three-door body style, differentiating it from the GSi.
